story involvement

AFFILIATION: good
FIRST SCENE: Fouled By War
BACKGROUND: Raised in the state of New York, by a family very much torn apart by the Civil War, Joseph's opinions on the military were always very influenced by his two older brothers (Jacob and Gordon). Having been alive during the last years of the War, they often recalled stories to him of their father's experiences, making him out to be a hero. It wasn't until he was 17 that Joey's mother told him that his father had in fact been a bloodthirsty slave owner who had abandoned the family when she would not follow his ideals, leaving her and her three small children with absolutely nothing to live off of.

At this discovery, Joey immediately joined what served as the US Military of that time. It was during his service that he found himself at The 8-Nation second intervention of the Boxer Rebellion. While fighting among the chaos, it was there that a vampire found him wounded and took advantage of him, killing and siring him.

"You were almost dead. You begged to be saved. You were delirious at the time."

This vampire, Gabriel Cross, grew impatient and instead of waiting for his new childe to rise left the scene thinking he would return and find Joey again. But when he came back, they were already burning the bodies, and Gabriel assumed that Joey was among them and thought him dead. Left alone, Joey awoke unsure of what he was and tried to make his way back to New York to move on with his life. He quickly learned that he no longer had a life and learned to stay hidden.

Eventually continuing his military service for something to do, Joey found himself shipped off to war during both World Wars. It was in during these wars that he first met his two best friends, Eddie Toloni and Domenico Rizzo.

"Chaos is our friend."

After the second World War, Joey focused his time and effort on his first love--music. Playing in London for a while, he got a sneak peak at what would become the great punk rock movement. In 1969, he once more ran into his good friend Eddie Toloni, and after saving the other drunken vampire from the Slayer of the time, invited him to learn electric guitar and join the band he was with at the time. Eddie took him up on the offer and the band went on tour.

In 1974 while on tour in Washington D.C., he met Andy, a werewolf who was then working for Wolfram & Hart. The lawfirm, having more than a few prophecies of the future and how Joey was involved with it, sent her to awaken his demon. And it worked.

"You really don't want to meet my demon."

For the first time since dying, Joey found in her an outlet for his rage and violence, letting that demon run free. He became obssessed with violence, allowing Andy to infuence him as her employers had sent her to. Eventually it alienated him from the one friend he had left--Eddie Toloni--and the band broke up later that year, after a fight between the two vampires. While Joey did later find Eddie and apologize--after helping the other vampire break out of police custedy--the damage had already been done and they could no longer perform as a band publicly until the world forgot about them and their fight.

Joey and Eddie wouldn't see each other again until 2008, long after Joey had pulled himself away from Andy's influence, when the music scene and his current band brought Joey to live in Seattle, Washington--a city that was quickly becoming a hot spot for demonic trouble even then. The city where he would meet the woman he already loved deeply from another lifetime.

"You chow down in the name of justice? Gross."

Anita Lawrence, the Slayer next in line after Faith and Buffy, recaptured Joey's heart immediately. Though they knew it was a dangerous situation and possibly even a toxic, yet poetic, relationship they were unable to stop themselves. In fact, Anita had such an affect on Joey that his undead body actually tried to live again for her.

Eventually, after Eddie became an angel he granted Joey back his life to make up for using Anita's blood to save Ash. With a second chance at life, Joey and Anita attempted to settle down, even started a family, but her calling as the Slayer pulled her away more often than not and eventually led to her capture by Courtney and the death of their unborn child.

At the news that Courtney had taken Anita, Joey realized he needed his vampire strength back in order to save her. Going to Gabriel, his original sire, he convinced the other vampire to sire him again. Rising a newborn vampire with the knowledge of an undead veteran, Joey found his strength doubled just by the mere fact that his blood was now mixed with Gabriel's--who by this point had been possessed by Lucifer himself. Using this new strength, he ultimately fought his way to where Anita was, but it was too late to save her life.

Realizing that the baby was already dead, that she was quickly dying in his arms, Joey did the only thing he could to save her. He killed her, turned her into the very thing she had been born to fight against. He sired the Slayer.

"Let me die."

Though things were understandably tense between the two of them for quite some time, Joey and Anita did finally make up, and now soulless plotted to destroy Ash and Eddie. They even went so far as to gain Gabriel's help, following the two vampires to England where Anita, despite Joey's last minute request, staked Eddie.

Eddie's wife eventually made a deal with a demon to bring him back, while Joey and Anita took a temporary break from each other that, of course, didn't last long. Thoug they faced a few big problems and enjoyed a few rare good times over the next year--the return of Andy, the Watcher's Council sending men after the Slayer, their marriage--it wasn't until the year 2029 that anything major would happen to them directly.

"You and I both know that one of these days I'm going to snap, and this time there'll be no coming back from it."

While things in Seattle seem relatively quiet at first, Joey fought an inner battle with his demon, finding it more and more uncontrollable. Only too late do they discover that the reason his darkness is so powerful is because an ancient demon, an Old One, is destroying it and taking his body as a vessel.

With the essence of Joey Kurtz, the vampire, completely destroyed, Apollo begins his quest to control the world, using his power over the sun to affect the vampires and demons of Seattle. It is only when Eddie awakens some of Joey's memories that Apollo begins to lose control, and eventually with the help of Dom, and eventually his own resouling by the higher being Callie, Joey was once more himself--though he only held the memories he'd had before Gabriel had sired him to save Anita.

Now, trying to rebuild a life that has changed so drastically over the last twenty years, Joey has gone to LA and sought the help of Illyria, attempting to control Apollo's consciousness before it controls him.
